Research Methodology, Practices and Projects


This course provides an opportunity for novice researchers to establish or advance their knowledge about research and to enhance their skills in each phase of the research process. Students get theoretical and practical knowledge in selecting the research problem and formulating the research question, selecting appropriate research strategy, data collection and data analysis methods. Besides, the course provides knowledge on different philosophical approaches in science, on quality criteria used to evaluate the research and the ethical issues every researcher should consider.

About This Course

Intended learning outcomes

    After finishing this course the learners are expected to be able to

  • Understand research terminology
  • Recognize the role of the literature in different stages of the research process
  • Define a research problem, aim and research question
  • Distinguish between different approaches towards science and research
  • Understand different research strategies, data collection, and data analysis methods
  • Distinguish different quality criteria when evaluating and reflecting on their own research
  • Consider the ethical issues associated with research

Learning activities

Each section starts with "About this section" that describes the activities within the section and provides a summary of the content in the section. It ends with three sub-sections where there are three learning activities. The first is a text providing a summary of the section to be read for the learner before the assessment. The second assesses the knowledge acquired through a quiz with 10 automatically graded questions. The third one is an assignment for assessment of the skills obtained. The tutors grade this assignment.

    Ilgar Guliyev

    Ilgar Guliyev is a Teaching Manager at Huangjia International Kindergarten in China. He is holding a master`s degree (with honorarium) in Economic Theory. Besides his 8 years` teaching/tutoring experience in English, he also has approximately 2 years` teaching experience in Economics at University of Technology of Azerbaijan. His background also includes journalism at ARB Aran TV Channel, senior expert at Statistics Department of Yevlakh Town, Certified Business Trainer (Start Your Business) of International Labor Organization and so on.

    Mr Guliyev has participated at various local and international educational events and activities, including “Business Journalism” (The UK, London, 2017), “Research Methods in Labor Studies” (India, Noida, 2018), Sociopreneurship in Action (Indonesia, Surabaya, 2019).

    Shahriyar Mukhtarov

    Dr. Shahriyar Mukhtarov is an associate professor and the Head of the Department of Economics, at Baku Engineering University, Azerbaijan. Dr. Mukhtarov received his M.A. from Marmara University in 2012 and completed his Ph.D. in Banking at Marmara University in 2016.

    The holder of several national and international awards, Dr. Mukhtarov has realized various research projects in Macroeconomics and Microeconomics and published numerous scientific articles on Monetary and Fiscal Policy, Sustainable Development, Energy Economics and Banking in peer-reviewed journal which are indexed by Web of Science and Scopus databases. He has served on many editorial boards and as referee of the many journals. He also delivers lectures in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Monetary Policy. Mukhtarov's research interests include the energy economics, sustainable development, monetary economics, building and applying econometric models for policy purposes.

    Sevil Imanova

    Sevil Imanova has 20 years of experience in Azerbaijan academic environment. She worked in different positions such as research assistant, Bologna coordinator of the university; head of Quality Assurance of the university, coordinator of exchange programs, vice-rector for International Relations. She was the manager of some of EU Projects which implemented successfully in Higher Education.

    She was the recipient of grants Erasmus Mundus, Erasmus+ many times. Ms. Imanova was trainer and consultant different local and international companies in quality assurance and management fields. She teaches in quality management, quality assurance, human resources, ethics in education, management. She is one of the Higher Education Reform Expert of Erasmus+ in Azerbaijan and Senior Lecturer at the Industrial Engineering Department at Baku Engineering University.
